Model Railways

I have had an interest in model railways since I was a kid, around 1960 or so. May be I can help someone who needs my knowledge in this area. Having had an extensive career of 49 years with QRNational, my knowledge of railways is very extensive as well.

  1. Just saying G’day. I have a small layout. I wish to get up and running again after about 15 years. I mainly run green and yellow Australian National Railways loco’s with mostly Australian type rolling stock of the Lima type in HO scale.
I want to remodel the layout creating a small town with truck stop, hotel, post-office, etc. etc.
I am not electronicly minded but would love some help to put electric signals and maybe electric points in.
Any assistance would be appreciated….Thanks….Guy Cartwright

    1. Can anyone help Guy? Please leave a comment if you can. Guy! Two heads are better than one therefore a whole world of them should be better than two. I will get back to you when I have had time to think about it.

      1. Bill! I made a bit of room in the shed for the layout today with the sallie’s picking up most of the stuff left-over from the garage sale. Vaughan said he would help me to get the layout down off the wall. I don’t know if he know’s a lot about the technical side of setting up electronic points and signals, but any help will be appreciated.
As Vaughan doesn’t have a layout of his own I told him, once it is up and running, he would be more than welcome to use mine…..thanks…Guy

    2. G’day Bill. I have to thank Vaughan for his help in getting my layout down off the wall and on it’s trestles. Much appreciated mate….thanks.
I have found my model loco’s and rollingstock and boy have I got a cleaning job ahead of me, as they were put away in the garden shed by my late Dad in about 92. There is plenty of cockroach crap to get rid of. I was thinking of using something like WD40. I know it’s not a good idea to wash model loco’s with water. So I figure WD40 might be the safest option unless you have any suggestion.
I have decided to buy new track and this time electric points. I will need some help with setting them up and getting the electric signals up and running.
Any volunteer’s? ha ha ha. please???….Bye….Guy

      1. If you are going to use WD40 to clean with, first remove the plastic body. The plastic parts can be cleaned with warm soap and water. An old tooth brush can be used to clean the coal in the tender. Use paper dish cloth or sponge to clean with. You shouldn’t submerge things in water. Just use the cloth or sponge and squwease the excess water out. After cleaning rinse and dry. The chasie needs to be blown off with air. Don’t make the pressure too high. I have used co contact cleaner to do this but you need to oil the mechanisium before running the loco.

  2. Check the posts for more on this subject. I wanted to have related posts on related pages but it’s just not happening.

  3. I happen to be commenting to make you be aware of of the cool encounter my wife’s girl gained checking your web site. She discovered plenty of pieces, not to mention what it is like to possess a great teaching spirit to make many people completely fully grasp some impossible subject matter. You actually did more than our desires. Thanks for distributing those interesting, safe, educational and as well as fun tips on your topic to Jane.
